In our efforts to intensify our campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as part of the 16 Days of Activism, we organized a one-day seminar at the Swiss International Beland Hotel Owerri.
In the interactive session held, participants collaboratively devised 12 Action Plans, focusing on heightened sensitization and increased awareness of the VAPP law, with a specific emphasis on punishing perpetrators. Present was also, Mrs. Adaku Elibe, a GBV survivor, who shared her harrowing experience at the hands of perpetrators, expressing gratitude to my office and the Ministry for their support, protection, and empowerment to care for her children.
Dr. Blessing Azubuike, the Director for Women Affairs of the Ministry, facilitated the workshop and provided hotline numbers for reporting GBV incidents, urging adherence to the agreed-upon action plans. The workshop drew representatives from diverse groups, including Federal Polytechnic Nekede (FEPNOWA), Proclaim Nigeria, Librarians (Imo State Chapter), Armed Forces widows, CSO’s, the Nigeria Youth Congress (Imo State Chapter), and male and female students from tertiary institutions in Imo state.
Dr. Chioma Emuka, a program analyst and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association in Imo State, provided insights into the Violation Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP LAW), urging participants to understand their rights. Resource person Mr. Samuel Obizue detailed various forms of GBV and encouraged reporting such acts to authorities or the Ministry.
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of Award by the Librarians, Imo State Chapter, led by Dr. Ngozi Azubuogu to me as the Patron of the Association for my dedication to alleviating the suffering of women, children, and indegents in th state.
