World Day Against Trafficking In Persons, 2021
Today, as we commemorate World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we have a larger opportunity to shine a light on modern-day slavery and this horrible infringement of human rights. This day reminds us to commit to helping our leaders eradicate all forms of modern slavery, forced labour, and human trafficking by the year 2030.
Do you realize how many people are sold like commodities in the market today? Both in our local and international markets? This violation is done for so many disgusting reasons; exploitation of women, harvesting of organs, forced labour, child marriage, begging, etc. It is a grave infringement of their human rights which should not be allowed.
As this year’s campaign theme: “Victims’ Voices Lead the Way,” there will be a particular focus on listening to and learning from survivors of human trafficking. We hope we can establish effective measures to prevent this crime and to support victims in their rehabilitation.
So how can you help? In order to protect our community members and loved ones, you and I ought to be more aware of our surroundings thereby, reporting any signs of forced labour or abuse towards a person; especially our girls and women, as they make up almost 80% of the victims being traded.
