16 Days of Activism Against GBV Campaign in Secondary Schools

We began the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV Campaign in secondary schools situated in Imo State with the theme, “CATCHING THEM YOUNG”, where we aim to enlighten teenagers about their rights to self-defence.

Our first visit was to the Community Secondary School Mbieri in Mbaitoli LGA, on November 30, 2023, and my representative, Honourable Commissioner for WAVG, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu focused on stressing the importance of educating boys on respectful behaviour towards women and girls.

During the lecture, Mr. Samuel Obizue clarified what violence against women and girls was and identified various perpetrators’ behaviour. He guided young men on proper conduct and young ladies on self-protection, providing a hotline for reporting incidents anonymously.

The wife of the Sole Administrator, Mbaitoli LGA, Lolo Christine Opara, and the Woman Leader, Dame Isabella Asinobi, urged students to avoid cultism and drugs, emphasizing the bond between girls and their mothers. The Director of Women Affairs, Dr. Mrs. Blessing Azubuike concluded by encouraging children to speak up and take action when witnessing issues.

In the vote of thanks, the Principal of the school, Lady Chinyere Okonkwo and one of the students, Miss Chioma Egbuchulam expressed their gratitude and promised to share the gained knowledge.

In attendance were Ministry staff as well as women from the Obazu Women’s Association, all collectively working to empower and protect the younger generation.
